Dr. Brassard did not wish to help write this guide. I wrote this based on internet research and user submissions.

Dr. Brassard is a Canadian SRS surgeon in Montréal Québec. He does both MTF and FTM surgeries. His MTF technique is the standard penile inversion method.

Requirements for SRS:

Dr. Brassard follows the WPATH standards of care.

Surgery Letters:

You are required to have two letters of recommendation for SRS and one for breast augmentation or top surgery. It can be written by a therapist, counselor, psychologist, psychiatrist or social worker. One letter should be written by someone with a Ph.D., and the other has to be by someone with at least a master's degree.

(List of online therapists that provide letters for surgery)

You must have been on hormone therapy for at least a year before SRS. They want a letter from the doctor that prescribes your HRT.

Real Life Experience:

Dr. Brassard requires for you to have at least a years worth of experience living full time in the new gender role.

You must pass these medical tests:
  1. HIV test
  2. Urine analysis
  3. Blood sugar test
  4. BUN (blood urea nitrogen)
  5. CBC (complete blood count)
  6. Resting E.K.G. with interpretation (if over 40 years old)

If you get negative results on these tests you can be denied surgery with Dr. Brassard. If you have HIV or diabetis that requires insulin then you won't be allowed to get SRS.

Length of Stay:

For MTFs, your total stay should be about 12 days. This includes two days before surgery. You will stay in the hospital for 3 or 4 days. Then you will spend 7 days outside of the hospital, after which you can remove your catheter.

Dr. Brassard doesn't require electrolysis or laser hair removal before SRS.

It is recommended that you stop smoking at least a month before SRS. You will be unable to smoke while at the hospital.

Available Surgeries:

Male to Female (MtF)
Breast Augmentation
Facial Feminization Surgery
Tracheal Shave

How Much Does Dr. Brassard Cost?:

As of 2012, Dr. Brassard charges 19,300$ Canadian dollars (about $19,000 USD) for MTF sex reassignment surgery and 7,125$ for breast implants.

For FTMs the pricing is 9,750$ for top surgery, and 43,900$ for a phalloplasty. Dr. Maud Bellanger performs the mastectomy (top surgery).

If you are male to female, you will need to pay 2,000$ Canadian dollars to schedule a date for SRS. There is an additional deposit of 2,500$ 8 weeks before your surgery date. These deposits are non-refundable.

Breast implants have a 1,200$ deposit.

If you are female to male and getting a phalloplasty, then once a date has been set for the surgery, you will need to send a 5,000$ within the following 21 days or the date will not be reserved. Another 5,000$ is due 8 weeks before surgery and the full balance needs to be paid a month before your phalloplasty.

For FTM top surgery you must send a 1,200$ deposit within the
following 15 days or the date will not be reserved. If you cancel your operation less than 4 weeks prior to the date settled, your deposit will not be reimbursed. The full balance is due 4 weeks before your surgery.

There is a 50$ consultation fee.

After male to female SRS, you will need to use a vaginal dilator for the rest of your life. This is to retain the depth. Each surgeon has slightly different methods of dilation, you will need to follow your surgeon's instructions.

FTM Top surgery commonly can leave scarring on your chest. You can take precautions to prevent scars. You will need to follow general surgical aftercare.

Trans men have found silicone scar sheets very effective in reducing the visibility of scars after top surgery.

You should make sure to check the cost of traveling when calculating the price of surgery. You can use www.skyscanner.net and www.priceline.com to find the most affordable flights.
